The Data Science Roadmap for 2026 (Step by Step)
A clear, ordered path from zero to job-ready data scientist — the exact skills, in the order that actually works.
There's a lot of noise about how to become a data scientist. This roadmap cuts it down to a clear, ordered sequence you can actually follow.
Becoming a data scientist isn't about learning everything at once — it's about learning the right things in the right order. Follow this sequence and you'll build real momentum instead of getting lost.
Step 1 — Programming & SQL
Start with Python: variables, data structures, functions and libraries like Pandas and NumPy. In parallel, learn SQL — you'll query databases in almost every data job.
Step 2 — Statistics & data analysis
Understand descriptive and inferential statistics, distributions and hypothesis testing. Then practise exploratory data analysis and visualisation with Matplotlib, Seaborn or Power BI.
Step 3 — Machine learning
- Supervised learning: regression and classification
- Unsupervised learning: clustering and dimensionality reduction
- Model evaluation, cross-validation and tuning
- Hands-on with scikit-learn
Step 4 — Projects & portfolio
Apply everything to real datasets. Build 3–4 end-to-end projects, push them to GitHub with clear write-ups, and you'll have something concrete to show recruiters.
